What We Liked: This is another winning app from Learning Touch. Their apps always do exactly what I’d like them to and their phonics are really amongst the best in the App Store; I can always count on them for a solid educational experience I can trust. Everything says its name/makes its sound when tapped, there are helpful hints, and it’s a positive learning experience all the way around. Kids Crosswords is a great choice for simple phonics and spelling reinforcement for children who are ready to move beyond the FirstWords series of apps by tackling more complex arrangements of words in a carefully structured system of incremental levels that slowly increase in difficulty. With its more sophisticated blackboard theme this app is a great choice for older children who may need remedial help, and the free-choice levels and great options also make it easy to target specific skills (letter names/phonics/upper case/lower case). Even though the words are simple, my eight-year-old has been giving the more advanced levels of this app some play time because the theme isn’t too babyish and the word intersections and font choices interest her. What We Didn’t Like: This app is only set up for one user’s completion statistics. Many of the words and images are contained in the FirstWords apps, so if you are looking for all new words, you won’t find them here. Overall: Learning Touch has applied their streamlined, rock solid approach to early phonics and spelling in this flexible crosswords app. Kids Crosswords is easy to use and educationally sound, making it an ideal first crosswords app for kindergarten and first grade.
I like how you have the option of using phonics or letter names. One thing I would like to see is to require that the letters be placed in a left to right order. My son tends to rush through it if he knows he can just put the letters down without thinking about what needs to come first.
This app is good, but the description misled us into thinking it was appropriate for kids who are reading chapter books. It is for beginning spellers only.
Its another great app from the LearningTouch, created with kids in mind. My daughters favorite!
